".....and They Sailed Away For A Year and A Day" - powdercoated sheet metal & grid mesh with 180 small wire faces attached to the sails.

The title "....and They Sailed Away For A Year And A Day," came from the Edward Lear poem, where the sailors felt they were well-prepared for their journey, despite the opposite situation there is a happy ending to the story.

My artwork is intended to make a statement about the countless numbers of people who have, over the millenia, embarked upon treks across the  seas in search of a better way of life.  The open-sided and incongruous configuration of the boats and sails speak of scant choice of craft, as well as frequently unrealistic mindsets.

Wire faces woven into the gridmesh sails are an homage to the many souls lost at sea on ill-fated journeys, while also being a celebration of the many who against all odds made it to their destination and a new start to their lives.
